Week 9: Critiques
Students will present their projects to an interdisciplinary panel of outside experts for feedback and discussion.
The course project is [a working prototype of an educational technology]({{< ref "courses/studio/assignments/demo.md" >}}), accompanied by [a short paper suitable for submission to an academic conference]({{< ref "courses/studio/assignments/conference_paper.md">}}). Students' presentations will include a work-in-progress version of the paper's argument, as well as a functional prototype of their projects.
Invitation to critics
If you will be contacting potential critics directly, please use this language to invite them to our critiques:
Dear Prof. X,
I would like to invite you to join a mid-semester critique of student projects in Dr. Chris Proctor's course, Critical Computational Literacies Design Studio. The critiques will take place online on Tuesday, March 30, from 4:10-5:40pm (eastern).
The course is focused on design which researches and enacts new forms of computational literacies, in and out of K12 formal educational spaces. Computer Science (CS) is becoming a mainstream subject in K-12 education even though how it will be defined and taught are not yet well-established. Developing tools for teaching and learning presents an opportunity to support teacher practice while enacting a vision of K-12 CS as a culturally-sustaining, justice-oriented practice, and imagining ways in which K-12 CS might contribute to broader transformation of our schools and communities.
The primary purpose of the critiques is to help groups advance their projects in the weeks between critiques and the final expo. We encourage critics to strike a balance between engaging with the project being presented and connecting it to broader issues in their fields of expertise. It is particularly valuable to stoke discussion between critics coming from different fields. After presenting their prototypes, we encourage students to take a listening stance, providing clarifying information as appropriate, but not necessarily defending their work against criticism.
