Your computing future

Assigned Week 10 (March 23). Due Week 14 (April 20).

In approximately 1000 words, write a possible future for yourself as a computing educator. This essay could play a role in bringing about the future you imagine; it could be the basis for future cover letters or statements of purpose. For example, here is Dr. Proctor's teaching statement from his 2019 job application to UB (this teaching statement is an example of how this kind of writing can be powerful; it's not a model for this assignment as it doesn't follow the expected structure.)

This essay should have the following structure.

  • Introduce and define yourself as a CS educator. Explain your background, how you think about the field, and the core values that guide your work. This definition should locate you within the field of computing education.
  • Develop several possible futures for yourself. For each, describe how you would spend the next 5-10 years. What roles would you have? What kind of work would you be doing? Why does this feel important? What attracts you to this future? The point is not to identify the most likely or strategic futures for yourself; the point is to clarify what feels most important to you, and steps you might take toward that work.
  • Close by describing some concrete steps you plan to take in the next year or two to help you move toward some of these futures, or steps you plan to take to help you keep exploring them.
